If you want to feel like a Jules Verne character and descend into the depths of the earth during your trip to Andalusia, a visit to the massive Pulpí Geode is a must. Tucked away beneath an old mine lies this natural phenomenon, unique in the world, which serves as a reminder that geology is far from just a boring school subject.

But, what exactly is a geode?

The term originates from the Greek 'geōdēs', which literally translates to 'Earth-shaped.' Essentially, a geode is a rocky cavity, usually enclosed, with an interior lined by crystal formations. It isn't actually a mineral itself, but rather a complex structure of magmatic or sedimentary origin. While these natural wonders can be found all over the world, the one in Pulpí possesses characteristics that make it unique on the planet.

Discovered in 1999, the Pulpí Geode is extraordinary because it is the largest in the world! Located 60 meters underground, the geode measures 8 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.7 meters high. When you think about those dimensions... a person can fit inside, and that person could be you!
Since 2019, the Regional Government of Andalusia has opened the Geode to the public, complemented by a visitor center that opened in 2023. In January 2026, it was just included on the tentative list to become a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site.
